CENTRAL ANIMAL FACILITY

(Accredited by NABL for Biological Testing, Approval No. T-3331)

SASTRA houses a full-fledged (CPCSEA Registration No: 817/04/ac/CPCSEA) state-of- the-art Central Animal Facility (CAF) of 16,358 sq.ft. for the conduct of pre-clinical studies. The major objectives of the facility are to

Ø  conduct high quality animal research

Ø  provide scientific services and animal resources to students / researchers in and around this region

Ø  educate students/ researchers through certificate courses, internships and other programs

CAF provides the essential pre-clinical contract research and research models and services to various pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, agrochemical and chemical industries, as well as universities, government and other research organizations.

Infrastructure

CAF has all the important requisites for a modern laboratory animal facility including animal holding rooms for different species / strains, experimentation rooms, quarantine rooms, procedure room, clinical pathology laboratory, surgery room, necropsy room, test substance control room, UV sterilization room, etc. The facility also has exclusive transgenic mice rooms provided with Individually Ventilated Caging (IVC) systems and Bio-Containment Unit. The entire facility is centrally air conditioned round the year with the help of a dedicated chilling plant (180 tons capacity) and air handling unit.

Animal Care

CAF is dedicated to the humane care and use of research animals. SASTRA has an Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) which convenes regularly to scrutinize, approve and supervise the animal studies. The IAEC and dedicated veterinary staff manage policies and procedures to ensure that all animal use is performed in accordance with the highest standards.

Training

Certificate courses on ‘Laboratory Animal Techniques’ is conducted where the students/researchers are given hands-on training on a variety of modern laboratory techniques coupled with lectures on Laboratory Animal Management.
