The new challenges faced by the universities of our country in the context of globalization and liberalization are complex and the task that lies before us is formidable. Apart from the commitment to provide quality education, the universities have to reckon with national priorities in their action plans. In response to the clarion call of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India, to the universities ‘to become partners in national development’, SASTRA has taken up many projects.

We have established a research centre exclusively for Advanced Research in Indian Systems of Medicine which, I am sure, will soon result in significant achievements in this area of medical / herbal research.

The visits of Their Holinesses Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal to the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre, Kumbakonam on Mahamaham eve for the Special Convocation to award D.Litt. Degrees and to the main campus, for opening the New Blocks are some of the major events in this quarter.

The management of SASTRA extended the fullest support and help in all possible ways, to the police, the revenue and the municipal authorities throughout the ten-day festival culminating in the Mahamaham on the 6th March, 2004 attended by lakhs of devotees from all over the country. SASTRA provided full meals (Annadanam) to 1,00,000 devotees. I congratulate the staff and students of SASTRA main campus and SRC for their total dedication and involvement in this regard.

I wish the students all success in the forthcoming examinations.

I wish the readers of ITIHAS a happy and prosperous Tamil New Year.

His Holiness Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal delivering the benedictory speech (Anugraha Bhashanam), said that knowledge must be combined with experience in the educational process. Students must develop original thinking based upon what they have learnt. Culture is equally important in education and an education that misses or ignores cultural values and ethical imperatives will fail to achieve its purpose.

His Holiness Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal said that science and research are not new to India. Science is for the development of human knowledge and culture is for the development of the human spirit through age-old humanistic ideals such as ahimsa (non-violence), tolerance, love and universal brotherhood.

Their Holinesses blessed SASTRA Deemed University to develop further and become a beacon light for the country and for the world.
