Faculty members are encouraged to offer consultancy services. Broad areas of consultancy services provided by the University during the last three years include structure elucidation of small molecules using spectroscopic techniques, characterization of traditional drugs and raw materials, preclinical & clinical trials of traditional formulations, micrometrics, nanocoolants, chemical & biosensors, microbial remediation, materials characterization, surface coating, advance glycation end products, epigenetics markers for cancer, powder metallurgy, lean manufacturing, soil and water testing, traffic engineering, high voltage engineering, cyber security, etc.
The School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering has developed portable indigenous gas sensors to detect flammable gases and volatile vapours. This sensor was used as a diagnostic tool to examine the release of ethanol and methane from a 4 month old baby, which was reported to undergo spontaneous combustion. The results indicated that there was no evolution of the gases, which was also confirmed through chromosomal tests.
The School of Chemical & Biotechnology has developed a novel method to treat textile dye effluent using bacteria. Textile effluent from the Veerapadi Common Effluent plant in Tiruppur was used for the analysis. The effluent that was treated with novel treatment procedure showed complete decolourization, reduction in TDS, BOD & COD such that the treated effluent could be discharged in the ground. This technology is now being scaled and in the process of being transferred to an industry.
The School of Civil Engineering has undertaken an assessment of the safe Bearing Capacity of soil by conducting field soil testing and consultancy using Static Cone Penetration Test for construction of bridges and culverts along the National Highway 67 for M/s Madhucon Constructions (P) Ltd. Similarly the road safety between Perambalur and Samayapuram on NH45 was assessed since this stretch was highly prone to major accidents. The study was conducted for 4 days around the clock and it was determined that the road alignment, roadside parking & over speeding were major reasons for the accidents. The report was submitted to the Superintendent of Police, Tiruchirapalli.
A study on upgradation and expansion of water distribution networks of Thanjavur was conducted by the Centre for Advanced Research on Environment (CARE), School of Civil Engineering. The report was submitted to the District Collector of Thanjavur.
Conversion of old image files of the Tamil weekly, ‘Thuglak’, into text files with retrieval facility using in–house developed search engine was implemented by the School of Computing.
The Centre for Advanced Research in Indian Systems of Medicine (CARISM) offers consultancy to Siddha doctors of National Institute of Siddha, Chennai with respect to physico–chemical characterization of Siddha preparations. Some of the Siddha preparations that have been analysed for Siddha practitioners by the Centre are Ayaveera Chenduram, Seena Rasa Chenduram, Siddhar Kuligai , Kirubakara Shanmuga Chenduram and Puttru Pathangam.
Consultancy services have been offered to S. V. Ayurvedic College, Tirupati and Dr. N. R. S. Government Ayurvedic College, Vijayawada on the physico–chemical characterization of Vangeshwara Rasa and Vanga Bhasma, through the Central Instrumentation Facility of the University. A thematic herbal garden is maintained in an area of 25 acres at Thachankurichi by CARISM. Organic farming is practised in this garden where rare species of plants with medicinal significance are being cultivated. These herbs can be supplied as raw materials that are required for the preparation of Ayurveda and Siddha medicines.
The School of Mechanical Engineering offers consultancy to industries and researchers to test the performance of automobile engines.
An indigenously designed and developed electronic nose (e–nose) to check the quality of milk was tested and validated at the Aavin Dairy, Tiruchirapalli. The performance of the e–nose sensor was on par with the human olfaction system in discriminating the quality of raw milk. Moreover, our system was able to detect the quality faster than the conventional testing system. LED street light load testing was carried out for Perambalur Municipal Corporation by the faculty of School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
